Programs for Adults

Several of our programs especially appeal to adult library patrons and offer opportunities to socialize and share insights about books, learn or sharpen tech skills, or even become family historians. We also provide a free home delivery books service for our elderly and/or homebound residents.

Supply or Start a Book Club

Our Book Club Sets section makes it easy to start and supply your book club. The library has several titles available in sets of multiple copies. If there’s a title you don’t see and you’re interested in the library buying a set for your book club, contact Melinda Jones at mjones@alcpl.org or 256-232-1233.

Join One (or Both!) of Our Book Clubs

We have TWO after-hours book clubs! Join us on either the fourth Thursday of the month at 6 p.m. at Antiques on Jefferson or the third Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. at Athens Alehouse. Or choose both! One can never have too many books or too many book clubs. We’ll talk about all things authors, novels, and books. Our goal is to meet people, talk about books, and have fun.

Computer Classes

Want to learn how to use a computer, or maybe just use one more effectively? Join us at the library for some hands-on training. We’ll start at the beginning and cover everything from how to turn on your machine to how to access the Internet. Check our events calendar for classes. For more information or to register to attend a class, call us at 256-232-1233.

We also have collections of great how-to videos for at-home learning through Niche Academy. Click the links below to see the tutorials by category.

Genealogy

Researching your and your family’s origins can be fascinating and provides many people a stronger sense of connection to their ancestors and places and people today. Our Shelby Southard History Room is a great place to start with many online resources for genealogy work.

Free Home Delivery for Homebound Residents

Books make excellent company for people who can’t get out and socialize, and that’s why we offer At Your Doorstep, a free book delivery service for homebound Limestone County residents. Books and other materials are delivered by library staff, The Limestone Council on Aging within the city, and the U.S. Postal Service in the county. Homebound patrons never have overdue fines, shipping costs, or other fees.

To be eligible, you must:
  • Be an Athens city or Limestone County, resident.
  • Hold a valid Athens-Limestone County Public Library card. We can sign you up over the phone or send an application by mail or fax if needed.
