Become a Friend of the Library

Friends of the Library are community members like you with varied interests and a shared passion of valuing and supporting the public library. Active membership is open to individuals, families, and organizations who want involvement in promoting your local library’s materials, services, and programs.

What do Friends of the Library do?

Offer suggestions and support for specific library needs in the community.
Encourage community awareness by sharing their passion for books, learning, and libraries.
Provide volunteer assistance for library programs, open houses, special events, and public service projects.

Shop the Friends of the Library Book Sales

The Friends of the Library hosts a book sale every Tuesday from 10:15 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. and the first Saturday of every month from 9:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Come by and find a book to read! The FOL also has DVDs, Audiobooks, and the occasional puzzle.

Make a Donation

We welcome financial support through monetary donations and also donations of books and other media, whether they be for our collection, book sales, or approved antique and heirloom editions. See below for more information on these opportunities to support your library.

Donate Cash

Monetary donations should be given through the Athens-Limestone County Public Library’s supporting Library Foundation. For questions or additional information, please contact the Foundation at alplfoundation1@gmail.com. You can also visit the Foundation’s website at alcplfoundation.org

Donate Books and Other Media

We accept up to two bags or boxes of donations on Tuesdays from 10:15 am – 2:15 pm. Please coordinate with the library staff to make larger donations. Please contact us at 256-232-1233 with any questions or to coordinate large contributions.

We DO happily accept the following items in good condition:

Hardcover and paperback books
DVDs
CDs
Audiobooks

We cannot use the following materials:

Magazines
Cassette tapes
VHS tapes
Encyclopedias more than five years old
Books that show excessive damage, including water damage, mold, and dust
Books that have apparent insect damage, including spider webs
Books that smell strongly of smoke, etc.
Textbooks

Donations are tax-deductible. Library staff will provide you with a donation receipt that you may fill out for tax purposes. The library staff is not qualified to determine the value of your donation. You will be able to assign a value.

What does the library do with donations?

Newer items deemed to be of high interest will be evaluated for addition to the collection.

Most donated items are sold at library book sales or donated to other nonprofit agencies—the money raised through sales and cash donations funds programs and purchasing books and other materials.

All donated items are considered property of the library, to do with as staff and volunteers feel is best. Library staff and volunteers reserve the right to throw away any items they deem unsaleable, moldy, or containing pests.

All money from our used book sales goes to support the library and its programs.

Establish a Memorial or Honorarium

Books donated for this purpose should be new or an antique or heirloom edition of historical value. All books donated for our collection will be reviewed by the Board of Trustees Book Donation Committee. The Book Donation Committee will review books within 30 days and has the option to refuse any donation.
